What is NLP and how Does it Make Losing Weight More Sustainable?

NLP stands for Neuro-linguistic Programming.

Neuro refers to your neurology. Linguistic refers to language. Programming refers to how that neural language functions.

In others words, NLP is the language of your own mind.

The conscious mind operates differently than the unconscious mind.

For starters, our conscious mind can only work with 5-9 bits of information, while the unconscious mind works with 100’s if not 1000’s, constantly filtering through what’s important and what isn’t.

The unconscious mind also begins absorbing information from the outside world at a very early age. By the age of 8-10, your unconscious mind has already decided what matters most to us in most areas of our life.

Through modeling our environment, it will learn what love looks and sounds like, whether it is safe to express your emotions or not, what is healthy, and most of what we consider normal as an adult today.

This becomes an issue when the unconscious learnings of our childhood do not serve us in our adult lives, and maybe they never have!

Some of us may become aware of this or simply realize something is wrong.

This leads us to  make a resolution to change. We tell ourselves we will lose the weight, stick to a diet, hit the gym, end that relationship….but someway and somehow something goes wrong, we don’t feel like we can go through with it.

A voice in our head starts to say we can’t do it, and we just don’t understand why.

We fall off track with our goals AGAIN. We feel like a failure, and the cycle continues.

A common example is people who struggle with weight-loss.

They often have a conscious desire to lose weight and be more healthy.

They start diets and work out programs and go all-in but their unconscious habits, motivations, self-beliefs, and associations steer them in the opposite direction.

Within a week or two of starting, they may lose motivation, start feeling stuck, or talk themselves out of their own success.

We can understand why this happens if we think of our unconscious mind as the driver behind the wheel, while our conscious mind as the passenger giving directions.

It is likely that we’re trying to communicate with our driver, but our message is lost in translation.

With this miscommunication, people often never reach their goals.

NLP coaching helps you communicate with the driver specifically what you want,  so that you get to your desired destination

This means understanding your unconscious motivations, unlearning old associations, and consciously creating new ones.

It is like learning to use your brain for the first time!

NLP coaching commonly helps many people in the following ways:

  1. Setting specific goals & developing plans to achieve them.
  2. Reprogramming unconscious habits (eating, sleeping, stress response, & emotional triggers).
  3. Overcoming negative emotions surrounding health, intimacy, work, and personal growth.
  4. Curing phobias (sometimes in as little as 20 minutes).
  5. Overcoming anxiety.
  6. Getting unstuck in your career & finding work that aligns with your values.
  7. Making healthy eating & living a sustainable & enjoyable process.
  8. Becoming the healthiest & happiest version of yourself.
  9. Creating deeper & more intimate relationships that foster personal & professional growth.
  10. Learning new ways of asking for and getting what you want in your personal and professional life.
